Thermal imaging, when performed by an experienced home inspector who is also a certified thermographer, can be a powerful tool to locate and identify building issues which may not be apparent to the naked eye.  A thermal imaging camera (also known as an infrared or IR camera) picks up temperature patterns on surfaces.  Patterns can indicate areas with poor or missing insulation, areas with moisture issues or water leakage, or areas with significant air leakage.  A strong background in building science and thermodynamics is essential in interpreting thermal images.
